2020 ESSAY QUESTION

Immunizations for Children

All states require measles and other immunizations for young children. However, some states, like Pennsylvania, allow exemptions for religious or philosophical reasons. The number of measles cases has increased significantly in recent years and many of those cases have occurred among children who have not been vaccinated. Some health care professionals claim that state exemptions are too liberal and have led to a decrease in immunizations and a resulting increase in measles cases. Some states have responded by eliminating or seriously curtailing the immunization exemptions. Opponents of the efforts to curtail these exemptions argue that the immunizations are dangerous and parents should have the right to make their own decisions about having their children immunized.

Do you believe Pennsylvania should join other states in either eliminating or seriously curtailing the current exemptions from mandatory immunizations?
